Hello all,
I just recieved my first Medieval sword in the mail the other day, and Im going to take a close look at it here. First, let me say that I am extremely impressed by the service at Kult of Athena. I ordered my sword on wednesday, and had it in hand friday afternoon. Thats what I call a good delivery time. The box arrived in pretty good condition, nothing that remarkable:





I opened it up and found my blade wrapped in a protective plastic covering. I hurried up and removed this so as not to spoil the moment.






Finally, I uncovered it and got my first look at a Medieval sword.

The Hilt





The hilt of this sword is really very nicely done. The finish on both the pommel and cross are flawless, albeit with a bit too bright and shiny look about them. I would prefer a more subdued finish, but there's nothing wrong with it. The handle itsself has a very nice black leather wrap, with an almost invisible seam. The only things that bother me about the handle is that it is a bit on the slim side, even for my taste, and that the smooth wrap is ALMOST slippery. The proportions of the hilt are great in that I can grip it with both hands with relative ease and overall feels pretty good.







The Blade




In my opinion, this is one of the absolute best parts about this sword. The geometry is absolutely excellent, with very little to no wavering in the lines. The ridgeline is a little more hinted at than pronounced unless under the right light, and the fuller is well done and terminated. Something that is a common issue is of course the dullness of the blade. Not necessarily a bad thing, just something that needs to be corrected. Also, the throat of the sheath rubs the blade on all sides, not only affecting the sharpness, but also the finish. The point of this sword is truly wicked, although doesnt make this a purely thrust oriented blade.

Handling Characteristics

This sword really does handle superbly. One handed as well as two handed cutting is effortless. The balance point is at 4" and lets the sword feel alive in your hand. I must compliment Hanwei for this aspect, as it is beautiful to wield.

Conclusion

Pros:

~Handling is superb

~The blade is beautifully crafted

~The fit is great with no rattling or imperfections

~Overall, it is a beautiful sword

Cons:

~The blade is very dull

~Scabbard is a danger to the blade


Overall, this is a great classic hand and a half sword. There are alot of things i like about it even though there are some small problems with it. I would absolutely reccomend this sword to anyone who wants a great handling cutter, especially at the current pricing. I would have to say, after looking thoroughly at this sword, i would give it 4/5 stars.
