ACTUAL TITANIUM FUEL TANK FROM NASA APOLLO 18 MISSION
Here’s your opportunity to own a piece of American Space History. This is a one of a kind COLOSSAL space survivor that is as magnificent as it is alien.
This 15’ bluish purple silo would make for an impressive conversation piece on its own, but the history and uniqueness of this piece make it one of the rarest of finds on eBay or anywhere else.
WHAT IS IT?
A titanium fuel tank designed for spaceflight on the Service Propulsion System (SPS) on the Apollo Command Service Module (CSM).
There is probably no other material more closely associated with aerospace than titanium. At approximately 15 feet high and 3.8 feet in diameter this behemoth only weighs about 70 lbs. There are a few nicks and scratches to the exterior (see photos) but the brilliant purple color will last forever because titanium does not corrode!
Despite its size, it is mounted on a stainless steel base and can stand in the yard or foyer of a grand house. The cavernous tank also makes for one of the most amazing and unique drums you will ever here. Strike its titanium walls and listen to the sounds reverberate long after you've stopped hitting it.
WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
In 1970, NASA announced that it was canceling Apollo missions 18-20 and that Apollo 17 would be the last manned mission to the moon for the foreseeable future.
The remnants of the canceled missiles intended for the moon were declared scrap surplus and sold off. An astute naval captain saw the opportunity and purchased all of the Titanium for 10 cents a pound.
Today, many of these pieces adorn the gardens of the Captain's Southern California home. This magnificent tank is the largest and most audacious of them all.
Once a member of the Mercury Astronaut Program himself, the Naval Captain was roommates with astronaut Gus Grissom and briefly with Apollo 13's Jim Lovell. He saw the heroism and struggles of the NASA Space Program first hand and has kept these pieces as reminders for the last 40 years.
