Student dies after stone lantern falls on him during kendo practice
TSU -- A junior high school student died after a stone lantern fell on him during kendo practice at a shrine, police said.
Fourteen members of the kendo club from Ichishi Junior High School were practicing at a local shrine in Ichishi, Mie Prefecture, on Wednesday afternoon.
One of the students, Yuichi Ueni, 13, put his arms on a 2-meter-high stone lantern, and it fell on top of him, police said.
The student was taken to hospital, but he was declared dead shortly before 6 p.m.
The teacher in charge of supervising the kendo club was not watching the practice at the time.
"We feel sorry," said Ichishi Junior High School Principal Makoto Yokoyama. "Normally, teachers keep watch when students practice." (Mainichi)
