Nice knife, but needs thining behind primary edge to get the most out of itsDan (NW Arkansas) 1/20/2014 10:21 PM
Out of the box this knife is so, so sharp. I found that the area behind the primary edge needs thinning. Because this is ZDP-189 , you better know how to freehand sharpen on a diamond stone or be good with a belt grinderer. After going through 8" x 3" diamond stones in 140, 300, 600 and 1,000 grit, I was able to thin out the area for about 1/4" behind the primary edge. Now this knife is as sharp, as any knife can be. And it will hold this edge longer than any other steel I know. However, with over 3% carbon and crazy amounts of other steel chemistry, it's extremely difficult to sharpen. Edge retention is excellent, but not unless you are prepared to do the work up front to get that edge thinned down. I don't know why Spyderco didn't do this at the factory, but they didn't. On the plus side it has an extremely strong lock and is very tight. Personally, I don't lke RC in the 65 range. I prefer 60 RC max. However, if you know how to fix the edge geometry, you will have a totally sick edge that will last a very long time.
